Due to a lack of confirmed participants, we now decided to postpone the Autumn Work Horse Course to Spring 2016. Sorry to disappoint some of ye who were hoping to come!
Our next work horse course will take place on Sunday 1st November 2015 here on our farm in West Cork. This will be a very practical hands-on course where you can find out all about working with horses in farming, forestry and transport.
We will start at 10am with an introduction to working with horses over tea and coffee and then go out to meet our three work horses, Henry, Winnie and Flora, whom we will spend the rest of the day with. We will look at different ways to harness a horse and everyone will get to practice harnessing the horses. We will then start with long-reining in the paddock (driving the horses from the ground), which is an essential skill in working with horses. We will team up two horses and long-rein them in the field. There will be plenty of time to practise, and we will break for a home-made lunch (included in the course fee). After lunch, we will try out different farm implements in the field: harrow, plough, cart, sled, and we will also learn about pulling logs with horses. The day will finish around 4pm with tea and cake and an opportunity to leaf through some literature available. There will be a course hand-out for you to take away.
This course will very much be aimed at all levels of experience - beginners as well as people who already work with horses are welcome! We will tailor the course day around your individual interests, questions and needs. Please, get in touch for more information and to book. Booking essential - ring Sandra on 087 9389867.
